In line with Green Bird’s motto – clean streets make for clean hearts. Yes it’s true that the streets will get dirty again quickly, but we are doing more than just a quick clean of the streets. We are making the area more pleasant for people to live in. Hopefully locals realise that without rubbish around, they feel better. That might encourage them to keep the environment nicer. Just like how a clean toilet often stays clean, whereas a dirty toilet often gets dirtier. People are more likely to respect places that have been kept tidy and clean.

Sometimes people will ask me, “Why did you choose picking up rubbish as your way of helping out the environment?” To answer this, I want to borrow words from Green Bird’s philosophy:

Green Bird is the first step in

social contribution

that anyone can freely and

casually participate in.

I chose Green Bird because I wanted my contribution to be more visible. I do lots of things here and there for the environment, but nobody sees what I do. When you are out there on the streets, you are that presence that hopefully makes those around you think about plastic pollution and cigarette pollution more.

The direct environmental impact of picking up rubbish may look small, but this month again, we saved many kilograms of rubbish from entering natural ecosystems. If more people get involved, our impact will continue to growThat is my wish for this activity.

「この地球から“取るだけ”の存在にはなりたくない。ちゃんと“返したい”」

今月のイーストウッドで初参加してくれたボランティアさんの、とても素敵な言葉です。

グリーンバードのモットーは「きれいな街は、人の心もきれいにする」です。

たしかに、清掃活動の後、道はすぐにまた汚れてしまいます。でも私たちは、ただゴミを拾っているだけではありません。人々が気持ちよく暮らせる環境を作っています。ゴミのない場所にいると、自然と心が軽くなるものです。それに気づいた地域の方々が、環境をきれいに保とうという気持ちになってくれたら嬉しいです。きれいなトイレはきれいなまま保たれやすいけど、汚れたトイレはどんどん汚れていくように、人は「きれいに保たれている場所」をより大切にしたくなるのではないかと思います。

時々、こんな質問をされます。

「どうして“ゴミ拾い”を環境のための活動として選んだの？」

その答えとして、私はグリーンバードの理念の言葉を借りたいと思います。

はじめの一歩です。

私がグリーンバードを選んだのは、自分の環境への貢献が「目に見える形」であってほしかったからです。環境のために小さなことは普段からいろいろしているけれど、それは誰の目にも触れません。

でも街に出て活動すると、その姿自体が周りの人にプラスチック汚染やタバコのポイ捨てについて考えるきっかけになってくれるかもしれません。

ゴミ拾いの直接的な効果は小さく見えるかもしれませんが、今月も私たちは多くのゴミを自然環境に流れ込む前に回収することができました。

もっと多くの人が参加してくれれば、私たちの影響力はどんどん大きくなっていきます

それが私のこの活動への願いです。
