日本語↓ Thank you to those who joined our cleanup over the weekend. It was our first time cleaning up around the Broadway Shopping Centre and Ultimo area. At first, many people found that there wasn’t as much rubbish as they had expected, but before long we were filling our bags as usual with all sorts of waste, including Uno cards and koala stickers.
Even things like stickers, which may seem harmless to drop on the ground, are often made of plastic and contribute to the wave of microplastics entering our local waterways every day.
As I watched our volunteers scoop up hundreds of cigarette butts with their green bird gloves, I felt so proud of the community we’ve created here, and of the amazing people who care enough about our city to get out and make it cleaner and more pleasant for everybody.
I was also very grateful to our volunteers for being so understanding that I had to take care of my daughter during this month’s cleanup because my husband was sick. As a result, I couldn’t actually take part in the cleanup myself. I was there only as a guide, and without even being asked, our volunteers took the lead by helping me take photos and weigh the bags of rubbish we collected.
I really couldn’t do it without the help of all the people around me every month. It’s thanks to you that this organisation can continue to exist, so please know that everything you do is truly appreciated.
I’m already looking forward to our beach cleanup in August! I hope to see you there. 🌊
週末の清掃活動にご参加いただいた皆さん、ありがとうございました！
今回は、ブロードウェイ・ショッピングセンターとウルティモ周辺での清掃活動を初めて実施しました。最初は、「思ったよりゴミが少ないですね」という声も聞かれましたが、気がつけばいつものように袋はさまざまなゴミでいっぱいに。Unoのカードやコアラのシールまで見つかりました。
シールのように、一見すると何気なく地面に落としてしまいそうなものでも、多くはプラスチックでできており、地域の水路へ流れ込むマイクロプラスチックの原因の一つとなっています。
ボランティアの皆さんが何百本もの吸い殻を拾っている姿を見て、改めてこのコミュニティをとても誇りに思いました。
また、今月は夫が体調を崩してしまい、私は娘の世話をしなければならなかったため、清掃活動にはガイド役として参加するだけで、自分ではゴミを拾うことができませんでした。それにもかかわらず、ボランティアの皆さんは何も言わなくても自然に動いてくださり、写真撮影やゴミ袋の計量まで率先して手伝ってくださいました。
私は毎月、周りの皆さんの支えがあってこそ活動を続けることができています。皆さんの力がどれほど大きいものか、ぜひ知っていただけたら嬉しいです。
